Meet Isabel @yogagbg, yoga teacher as well as sauna and winter swimming guide.
Winter baths - an activity for every Scandinavian. We are meeting Isabel @yogagbg, yoga teacher as well as sauna and winter swimming guide. She gives us guidance to dare to take either an ocean or freshwater swim. How you see the positive effects of winter swimming, both physically and mentally. Sure, you might not feel like doing it, but nothing beats the feeling and reward of having the courage to defy all elements.
1.
My first tip if you want to start is to take deep breaths, when you stop breathing, that is when the cold takes a hold of you.
2.
Bring a pair of flip flops or something else to put on your feet or stand on.
3.
I personally do not get my hands wet, I easily get extremely dry and damaged hands and noticed that winter swimming made it worse.
4.
It is always nice to wear a beanie.
5.
When you are finished bathing it is always important to immediately take off your swimwear.
6.
It is best to have a nice bathrobe in terry.
I have been winter bathing since the early 2000s when I lived on Hamburgön. I started because I wanted to energise my self in the morning as well as prolong the summer. I used to take my car, have a swim, get dressed and then go to school. After a while, the ladder going in the water was taken away so I had to find other solutions.
But I have never liked to take a swim after I have been in the sauna.Isabel
I really liked to take a swim once in a while and I always started every new year with a swim. But I have never liked to take a swim after I have been in the sauna.
Then a couple of years ago, I think it was 2017, I was on Marstrand with my childhood friend My. We found a mackerel beanie and a bathrobe from emmamalena.
The idea was born that we should take two baths a week all winter long. And just like that, we founded the group The bathing mackerels.
It is way more fun to do it together and also more likely that you actually do it!Isabel
I tried to get more lovely girls to join as well. It is way more fun to do it together and also more likely that you actually do it!
2018 I bought a Portuguese water dog and I had him trained to save me if needed. But fortunately, it has never been needed.
I prefer when there is a ladder to go in the water and that it is not too deep so you can not reach the bottom. I also like saltwater the best but the lake in Åre is good enough now that I live there. Something to grab on to is great and also to bring a friend if you are not an experienced winter swimmer.
Something hot to drink after is always nice and do not stress to put on clothes after your swim.
A bit like having champagne running through your veinsIsabel
Dry up and feel the tingles in your body. A bit like having champagne running through your veins.
There are no musts, you either take a quick dip or you stay in a while. Do whatever suits you and do not stress because of what others are doing. If you do not want to go in at all, you do not have to, but just remember that you never regret a bath!

There is ice in Åre and down by the lake they have opened up a swimming pool where you can bathe! I also bathe by Tegeforsen where there are rocks, which I prefer to shallow lakes.
