The sea as a source of health

What is it about the sea that makes us breathe a little deeper and feel a little freer? That’s what we wanted to find out, so we headed to Kullavik to meet Emma Green – an inspiring figure who lives for movement, well-being, and a generous dose of fresh air. We talk about cold plunges, yoga, and life after a career in elite sports. What does it really feel like to dive into ice-cold water – and has she always been this brave?

Join us by the sea for a wonderful and heartfelt conversation about finding balance in life, coastal favorites, and the art of enjoying every moment – no matter the weather!

Hi Emma, it's such a joy to visit you! What is your relationship with the sea?

I'm so glad you wanted to come visit and join me down by the sea. To me, the sea feels like home – it reminds me of childhood summers.

Just being able to look out over the sea and the horizon brings a deep sense of calm to my soul.

I always feel a little more at ease after a visit to the sea. Just gazing out over the water and the horizon brings a deep sense of peace to my soul.

How does the sea affect your well-being? Do you swim all year round?

When I was growing up, I was definitely a bit of a cold-water wimp. These days, I swim all year round – something I started doing after I ended my high jump career.

I'm not as sensitive to the harsh West Coast weather anymore.

Maybe as a substitute for some kind of thrill? Anyway, at first, I almost always got sick after swimming. But then there was a turning point, and I actually started to feel healthier – but above all, it changed my attitude towards the weather. I'm not as sensitive to the harsh West Coast weather anymore.

Any tips for those who want to start swimming even during the colder months?

The first tip that many give is to keep swimming into the autumn.

Choose a calm day.

But if you want to start right now, choose a calm day. The wind is much worse than the cold, rain, or snow, in my opinion. Wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off. Base layers or wool garments are wonderful, as they hold the warmth really well.

I enjoy taking a jog down to a cold plunge in the winter because I'm already warm in my body beforehand.

Also, swim with company if you're new to it. And choose a spot with a ladder where it's easy to get in and out.

Is there a particular spot by the sea that feels especially special to you?

Not really – but I do love being anywhere where there are no other people (except for those I choose to bring with me), and ideally with nothing but nature in sight.

How does a perfect day by the sea look like for you?

If it's summer, I think the morning or evening by the sea is the most beautiful. When everything is still, there's something special about late summer. Even autumn. It's like the calm after the storm of people has settled – the water is warm, and the light is incredible.

Bringing the family for a picnic is cozy.

A sunny, crisp, and windless winter day is also wonderful – so beautiful. Bringing the family for a picnic is cozy.

How did you end up in Kullavik?

I grew up just a few kilometers from here, so I really wanted to move back this way. The proximity to the sea, school, activities, and my grandparents.

Tips on places to visit near Kullavik?

Time your visit for a day when @surdegsgott is open, grab some bread or buns, and head out to the cliffs!

When did you discover yoga? I understand it means a lot to you?

I found yoga during my years as a high jumper, when I had a lot of different injuries – mostly with my back, feet, and Achilles tendons. I was looking for a holistic solution – I felt something was missing in physical therapy. It quickly became clear that yoga had so much more to offer, a different approach to the body than what I was used to. And that intrigued me. I had high expectations, and the feeling that my body was letting me down drained a lot of energy. Shifting my focus to gratitude, understanding, and trust in my body – that was a form of liberation for me.

If you had to choose 3 yoga poses that anyone can do, which ones would they be?

One thing everyone can do is become aware of their breath. So, that would be the first.

Next, I think a great starting pose is Cat & Cow. It's perfect to do first thing in the morning to synchronize your breath with movement while warming up the spine.

One thing everyone can do is become aware of their breath.

A form of lunge – which stretches tight hips, hip flexors, and the front of the thighs. If you do it in a dynamic form, you might also engage the hamstrings, arms, and upper back.

Tell me about your job, do you have any dream assignments?

What a great question about dream assignments! I mostly dream of some form of security – but at the same time, I want to feel a sense of freedom in what I do. I’m not sure if I have a specific title, but if I did, it might be "healthy lifestyle inspirator." I work as a yoga instructor, give lectures, and organize events/trips. I also have my own fitness app. In addition, I work a lot with Instagram as a platform to inspire movement and raise awareness about the choices we make for ourselves.

On my website, emmagreen.se, you can read more about me or follow me on Instagram @1emmagreen.

I have a need for balance between creativity and the athletic focus in what I do. So maybe, the dream is to find that perfect balance.

You were previously an elite athlete, please feel free to share your best memory from that time.

My greatest achievement from my time as an elite athlete was when I won the European Championship silver medal in 2010 in Barcelona, jumping 2.01 meters. In the weeks leading up to it, I had major issues with my Achilles tendon, and it was very uncertain if I would even be able to compete. I decided that if I could make it to the start line, there would be no doubt. I had to trust my body. It was an incredible feeling when my body held up, when I managed to set a personal record and surpass myself right then and there.

But what I miss the most are the friendships and the unique camaraderie that sports gave me. All the travels and amazing experiences I had, even outside of competitions.
