COLDBATH

More cold dips, with Siv from Käringön!

A winter dip clears the mind and lifts the spirit.

The cold bathing season in Sweden is long – and we love it!
And we especially enjoy it with our bathing buddy and cold dip expert, Siv from Käringön. Siv swims all year round and has done so with varying levels of enthusiasm ever since she moved to Käringön to become a year-round resident thirty years ago.

Let’s hear her thoughts on cold water swimming.

Why do you swim when it’s cold?

Oh, I can tell those who haven’t tried it yet — no matter the season, you never regret a swim. Sure, it can feel daunting, even downright crazy, to take the plunge when the water is icy cold. But it’s such a refreshing and energizing activity. And so simple!

It really is that simple!

When you swim in cold water, your body reacts by sending blood to your vital organs to keep them warm, which can boost circulation and metabolism. Cold dips may also help strengthen your immune system and can ease stress and anxiety. Personally, I always feel a slight sense of euphoria after getting out of the water.

What’s your routine when you go for a cold swim?

I always walk to the pier in my bathrobe, hat, and gloves. Right before getting into the water, the most important thing is breathing — calm and steady breaths. I usually stay in for about 1–3 minutes, and I never dip my head after October or before April.

Get yourself a swimming buddy!

Always swim with someone, not only for safety and security reasons but also because I believe it can enhance the health benefits even more," says Siv with a laugh. Find one or more swimming buddies to share the experience with. It’s important to encourage each other. Of course, it's also crucial to be careful and make sure you're healthy and in good physical condition.

Make sure you have a cozy bathrobe to return to after the cold dip, like an Emmamalena bathrobe. My favorite is the one with the waist tie, but I know many prefer a bath poncho with a hood.

Who taught you how to cold dip?

It was a wonderful lady here on the island who taught me. Sadly, she’s no longer with us, but she lived to 96, and I’m convinced it was because she swam all year round. We swam together many times, and it was always a special moment. At 10 o'clock, no matter the weather, it was time for a swim at her pier.

She lived to 96, and I'm convinced she reached such an age because she swam year-round.

With cold dips, you can check off this amazing list of health benefits.

  • Cold bathing helps increase blood circulation and strengthen the heart muscle.
  • Cold baths boost the production of white blood cells, which helps strengthen the immune system.
  • Taking a cold dip can reduce stress hormones in the body, leading to lower stress and anxiety levels.
  • Cold bathing can help lower body temperature, which may result in better sleep quality.
  • Cold baths can alleviate muscle pain and inflammation.
  • Cold bathing can increase metabolism, which may contribute to weight loss.

Cold baths along the west coast.

Find your own favorite spot to swim at — here’s a small list of cold bathhouses along the west coast.

Lysekil's Cold Bathhouse

This may be one of the best-preserved cold bathhouses on the west coast. The cold bathhouse in central Lysekil has been a popular spot for both locals and tourists since it was built in the early 1900s. Back then, the salty sea water outside of Lysekil was said to have a healing effect, and Lysekil quickly became a popular destination for bath-seeking guests.

There is also a sauna available to all members of the Kallbadhusets Vänner association, as well as to anyone who has purchased a single ticket.

Saltholmens Cold Bathhouse

But with tram number 11, you can easily reach Saltholmen’s cold bathhouse with a sauna in western Gothenburg. Beautifully located right where the mainland meets the archipelago. The bathhouse has separate men’s and women’s sections. Here, you’ll find a wooden deck, a sandy beach, and grassy areas. The cold bathhouse is operated by...

Strömstads Cold Bathhouse

Beyond the quay where the Koster boats depart, lies Strömstad's Cold Bathhouse, which opened in 2005. Here, you can both enjoy a cold bath and relax in the sauna. The first cold bathhouse was built north of Strömstad in the 1700s, and in the 1800s, a new cold bathhouse was constructed in the southern harbor.
