Cotton is made from cotton fibres – the soft fibres that surround the seeds of the cotton plant. The material has been used in textiles for thousands of years and is today one of the world’s most appreciated natural materials thanks to its softness, breathability and durability.
At emmamalena, you can feel confident that our cotton garments are produced with respect for both people and the environment. Sustainability is a natural part of everything we do – from material choices and production to transportation.
Here, we guide you through everything you need to know about cotton – from its properties to how to care for your garments so they last for years to come.
Breathable and comfortable
Cotton is airy and allows the skin to breathe, making it a comfortable choice for everyday garments. It helps transport moisture away from the body and provides a soft, pleasant feel against the skin.
Naturally absorbent
The material absorbs moisture well, which makes it comfortable to wear even on warmer days and in everyday situations.
Durable and easy to care for
Cotton fibres are strong and resilient, allowing garments to maintain their shape over time. They also become softer the more they are worn and washed.
A natural material
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a renewable material. When cultivated responsibly and produced with care, cotton can be a sustainable choice for your wardrobe – especially when garments are worn for a long time and properly cared for.
Cotton is a durable and easy-care natural material – but with the right care, your garments will last even longer.
Washing and drying
Wash cotton at 30–40°C unless otherwise stated on the care label. Lower temperatures are gentler on the fibres and help save energy at the same time. When it comes to drying, air drying is the best option. Hang or lay the garment flat and gently reshape it while still damp to help maintain its fit. Tumble drying may cause shrinkage and wear on the fibres, so if you do use a dryer, choose a low heat setting and a gentle program.
All our cotton jersey is Swan-labelled or OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning the materials meet high standards for environmental responsibility and chemical content. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your garment has been produced with care – from fibre to finished piece.
We also believe in making the most of what already exists. That’s why we strive to give leftover fabric from the cutting process new life in other products or contexts. Using our resources wisely is a natural part of how we work with cotton and sustainability.
We love getting to know new people, individuals who share our passion for the ocean, the coast, quality, craftsmanship, and design. And all the other magical things in life. Here you get to meet some of them, who, just like us, appreciate timeless and stylish design.
